  Chapter 1

Maxine surveyed the dusty desert wasteland around her. She had been on the road for days but the wilderness didn’t seem to change and she wondered for a moment if she had been driving around in circles. She had never been this far east before, so the terrain was unfamiliar to her, but the last settlement she had traded at had mentioned a number of other settlements out this way. She moved over to a desert bush and squatted behind it as she relieved herself. She smiled to herself, amused at this hangover of civilisation that she felt the need to conceal herself when there probably wasn’t a soul for miles and even if there was, they would likely shoot her on sight and steal her vehicle and supplies. If she was lucky. She, like so many, had long since lost track of time. She remembered she had been twenty-two when the war had started. It only lasted days and when it finished, civilisation had gone and only anarchy and barbarism remained. She seemed to think it was five or six years ago. Estimates she had heard from the few people she had spoken to over the last few months ranged from three years to ten years. She shook herself dry and pulled her jeans up as she got back to her feet. With a wary eye for any tell-tale dust clouds in the distance, she walked back towards her vehicle, a black turbocharged Ford Mustang. It was a beautiful car, or at least it had been. Now it was covered in armour plating from one end to the other. She had made some other special modifications herself and without it, she would have been dead years ago. She reached out and wiped the dust from the driver side window with her hand and gazed at her reflection. Before the war, she, like her car, had been considered quite beautiful - tall, slim, shapely legs, pert breasts, a pretty face and long, well conditioned red hair. She looked at the wild creature that gazed back at her. The pretty girl was still there, she told herself, but buried under a layer of dust and grime. She wore a vest top that had once been white and a worn leather jacket over the top of it. Her skinny jeans were ripped and stained with oil in several places and her leather motorcycle boots were scraped and battered. She moved closer to her reflection, focusing on her face. Her long hair was a tangled mess, her eyes looked weary and her mouth expressionless. When was the last time she had smiled? She couldn’t remember. Days? Weeks? Surely not months?

“Snap out of it Maxine.” She told herself. “Self pity isn’t you.” She often talked to herself when she was on the road. Initially, she’d tried to keep it in check as she’d heard it was supposed to be the first sign of madness, but she’d decided to hell with it. In this world, madness would probably be a release anyway. She pulled open the car door, banishing her reflection and climbed in, sinking into the bucket seat and turned the key in the ignition. The V8 Engine fired up with a throaty roar and she accelerated towards the horizon.

She had been driving for an hour when she noticed a car abandoned by the side of the road in the distance. She eased off the accelerator and cruised past. It looked in pretty good condition, so it hadn’t been there long. Cars were quickly ransacked for parts and would be reduced to little more than a chassis in days, sometimes even hours. The brakes squealed as Maxine slowed down and stopped on the opposite side of the road. She didn’t like it. It felt like a trap. But the carburettor in her Mustang was faulty and had been for months. She badly needed a replacement before it gave out completely and left her stranded in the wasteland. If that happened, she was as good as dead. Maybe she could take one off this car and adapt it. She gazed at the car for a moment and let out a sigh, reluctantly deciding that it was too good an opportunity to pass up and it was worth the risk. She reached for her crossbow on the passenger seat and climbed out of the car. She crossed the road, the crossbow pointed towards the abandoned vehicle. She began to circle it warily, expecting an ambush at any moment, but everything was still and the only sound was the gentle breeze whistling through the dry desert brush.

“Water…” A rasping voice begged, making her start. She spun around, training the crossbow on a figure lying on his back on the ground. “Please… water…” She swung the crossbow around her, wondering if he was a diversion to attract her attention while the trap was sprung. There was no one. She moved cautiously towards the figure on the floor, sweeping the crossbow from side to side. He was probably in his early thirties and surprisingly clean for a Wastelander. His clothes were undamaged and also looked clean. His lips were cracked and he was obviously very weak as he could barely move. His blue eyes gazed at her, pleading with her. She lowered the crossbow and considered what to do. He was probably already dead. Pointless to waste water on a lost cause. Best to put him out of his misery and salvage what she could from his vehicle. She raised the crossbow and aimed at his head. His eyes widened and he tried to shake his head. Maxine’s finger tightened on the trigger before releasing it and lowering the crossbow.

“Goddamn it.” She cursed, walking back to her car and pouring some water into a bottle from the water tank in the back. She came back and poured the water into the grateful man’s mouth. He gulped it down and smiled weakly at her.

“Thank you.” He whispered. She checked his pulse. It was very slow. He obviously wasn’t out of the woods just yet. She racked her brains, trying to remember what to do. Before everything went to hell, she had attended a first aid course for her job at a law firm, but that was another life. She must need to get his heart rate up. Did she need to raise his legs? Was that it? Maxine slapped him across the face a couple of times. He groaned, but barely moved. She checked his pulse. It was still dangerously low. She grabbed his legs, raising them in the air. Again, nothing. As she dropped his legs, she noticed how tight his trousers were. She undid his belt and loosened them off. As she did so, her hand brushed his groin and he groaned. She did it again and as before he groaned. She checked his pulse. Still very low, but faster than before. A thought ran through her head. She immediately banished it. She couldn't do that. She checked his pulse which had dropped to dangerous levels once more. She sighed, her mind made up. Despite her misgivings, she couldn't afford not to do it. She pulled his trousers down to his knees and hooked her fingers into the elastic waistband of his underpants, pulling those down too. She looked down at the limp cock lying against the semi-conscious man's thigh. She tentatively reached out for it, her fingers closing around the soft pale flesh. The man grunted, but his eyes were still closed. She began to gently stroke the shaft, the man moaning as his flaccid member began to come to life. She smiled with satisfaction as she felt it harden in her hand. His heart would be pumping now. Should she stop now he was out of danger? Safer to continue in case his heart rate dropped again she told herself, ignoring the dissenting voice at the back of her mind that was asking her just what the hell she was doing. Her hand quickened on the stranger's cock, his shaft growing rigid, the foreskin peeling back from the tip.
He was now fully engorged. Her hand seemed small wrapped around the man's thick cock. She held it for a moment, enjoying the warmth of it against her fingers, the weight of it in her hand. The man groaned again and unless it was her imagination, there was a hint of pleasure in it this time. She craned her head closer, looking at the purple tinged hue of the head, the slit wet with pre-come. She had an urge to taste it. She looked at the man's face. He still seemed to be barely conscious, though his mouth had dropped open and he moaned softly every time she pumped his cock. She leant forward, opened her own mouth and swiped her tongue across the tip, feeling the soft warmth of the skin, the salty taste of his pre-come. She licked her lips before dropping her head into the stranger's lap and taking his cock into her mouth. She closed her eyes and moaned with delight as she swirled her tongue around the tip. She heard him moan louder now as she began to take him deeper into her mouth, her lips sliding down his shaft. She drew back, his cock glistened with her saliva as it slid from her mouth. She could feel a tingle of excitement in her loins as she examined the erect cock in front of her and fought the urge to touch herself. She looked at the man's face. His eyes were still closed, but his colour had returned. She knew she was deluding herself that she was continuing now for the sake of his health, but screw it, in for a penny, in for a pound. Abandoning any pretence that what she was doing was purely for his benefit, she took his cock back into her mouth and began to bob her head up and down, sucking and licking at his rigid shaft. Something long dormant had been awoken inside her, something exciting and exhilarating and she had no desire to ignore it. As she slurped at his cock with gusto, the man's groans increased in intensity and she flicked her eyes up to his face. His eyes were closed, but his lips had curled into a smile. She felt him tense before thrusting his hips upward, grunting as his cock erupted in her mouth. Her eyes widened in surprise, but she locked her lips around the head of his cock and allowed him to fill her mouth with his come, gulping it down and savouring the taste. As his climax subsided, she pumped his shaft a few more times, milking the last of his come and sat back, licking her lips with satisfaction. She looked at the man's face. He gazed back at her, a look of amazement on his face that was so comical, it brought a smile to her lips.

"Thanks." He said finally. She wondered if he was thanking her for the water or the blowjob. Probably both.

"You're welcome." She replied, suddenly feeling quite embarrassed as she climbed back to her feet and wiped her mouth with the back of her wrist.

  Chapter 2

“My name’s Ethan by the way.” The man told her. She had stayed with him and given him a little more water and though shaky, he was back on his feet and leaning against the side of his stricken car. Now rejuvenated after his brush with death, Maxine noticed he wasn’t bad looking. He stood six feet tall, athletically built with short brown hair.

“Maxine.” Maxine replied hesitantly, turning away from him and peering through the windows of his car. “Look Ethan, I did what I did to save your life. It doesn’t mean we’re engaged or anything.” She reached for the door handle.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” Ethan told her, reaching out and grasping her wrist. She pulled her wrist free and spun angrily to face him.

“And you’re going to stop me are you?” She sneered.

“No.” Ethan replied, “But the high explosives wired to the door lock might.”

“You’re bluffing.” She said more confidently that she felt.

“Am I?” He smiled. “Look, how about a compromise. I’ll disarm the car, you take whatever you want from it and then you take me with you. You can drop me off at the first settlement we find.”

“What’s to stop me agreeing, taking everything I want and leaving you standing here in a cloud of my dust?” She replied hotly.

“Nothing.” Ethan smiled, Maxine noticing that his teeth were even and clean rather than the yellow and brown tombstones of the average Wastelander. “But there was nothing to stop you putting an arrow through my head rather than waste precious water on me either.”

“Maybe that was before I got to know you.” She snapped, angry that he was using her compassion, which was now a very rare commodity, against her.

“I guess I’ll just have to risk it then.” He said, reaching into his pocket and pressing a button on his key fob. The car beeped twice and he opened the door.

Maxine looked in the rear view mirror looking with satisfaction at the haul piled up on the back seat. She had filled up the petrol tank to the brim and filled a jerry can from Ethan’s car. He also had several days worth of food, a couple of litres of oil, some clean blankets and some batteries which she was particularly pleased about as her eyes flicked briefly to the glove box. The only thing Ethan didn’t have was water, as his water tank had split and leaked which had led to his predicament. She had checked the carburettor, but it wasn’t something she could salvage and adapt to the Mustang, so she would have to struggle on for a while yet. Ethan had kept a revolver, a small backpack and an aluminium attaché case, which he insisted were off limits to her. The attaché case in particularly piqued her curiosity.

“So, what’s in the case?” She asked him. Ethan, who had been gazing out of the window at the wasteland looked at her.

“I don’t know.” He replied. “I have to deliver it. That’s all I know.”

  “You haven’t looked inside?”

“No. Only the man I have to deliver it to can open it.” He pointed at what appeared to be a thumbprint identification sensor on the top of the case. That in itself was extremely unusual to see in the Wasteland.

“Why don’t we break open the case and see what’s inside.” Maxine suggested. “It might be valuable.”

“I swore to deliver it.” Ethan replied. “I gave my word.”

“Morals are something of a luxury in this world.” She told him. “Much like clean clothes and a gun. Where do you come from?”

“You have morals.” Ethan replied. “Most people would have left me to die.”

“More fool me.” Maxine replied. “A conscience is a weakness out here and will probably get me killed one of these days. Anyway, you didn’t answer my question.”

“No, I didn’t.” he smiled. Maxine started to wonder if she should have put an arrow through his smug face when she had the opportunity.

Two hours later, they passed a timber sign that read: ‘HOPE TOWN 5 MILES’ in roughly painted letters. Maxine had heard of Hope Town from the last settlement she had traded at. They said it was pretty rough, but then most of these settlements were. They passed the shells of abandoned vehicles and debris on either side of the road as they approached an ugly structure. It was a walled settlement as most were, with guards patrolling from the tops of the corrugated steel barricades. The tower of a wind turbine protruded above the walls, the rotor slowly spinning in the gentle breeze. They drove up to the doors. A guard stepped out towards them, a battered rifle in his hands and gestured towards a sign. It read:

HOPE TOWN RULES & TAXES (UNDER PAIN OF DEATH)

  THOU SHALL NOT KILL

  THOU SHALL NOT THEIVE

THOU SHALL PAY THE ENTRY TAX

ENTRY TAX: 2 LITRES OF FUEL OR 3 KILOGRAMS OF FOOD

“Nothing is certain but death and taxes even at the end of the world.” Ethan quipped. Maxine ignored him, climbing out of the car and decided to part with the petrol rather than the food. Payment taken, the guard nodded to the gate sentry, who swung the doors open. She drove inside the compound and the gates were shut behind them. Hope Town, even by post apocalyptic standards was run down. It was a shanty town, with ramshackle huts pieced together from rusty sections of corrugated steel, rotten plywood and torn plastic sheeting nailed or lashed together. It all looked like a strong gale would lay waste to the entire settlement. To the back of the settlement was a small field with crops which was also patrolled by guards. A large two story timber building that seemed to be constructed with a little more craft and care had a sign reading ‘Hope
Hotel’. There was a large brick building, presumably pre-war, in the centre of the compound which the compound had been built around. A rudimentary sign had been painted over the door which read ‘Stock Exchange’. There was a row of battered vehicles parked just inside the gate, so Maxine parked the car alongside and they climbed out. She grabbed her crossbow, made sure the Mustang was locked and walked towards the building. They received curious glances from the local population, who despite the sign outside, all looked like thieves and murderers. Unlike her companion, who glanced around nervously, these were Wastelanders through and through. They stopped outside the stock exchange.

“Well, I guess this is it.” Maxine said to Ethan.

“I guess so.” Ethan replied. His cockiness replaced by anxiety as he looked about him. He had obviously expected the settlement to be a little more civilised. His problem, not hers.

“Keep that gun of yours to hand and they should leave you alone.” She told him. He nodded in thanks and reluctantly wandered off towards the ‘hotel’. She felt a slight twinge of guilt as she watched him go, wondering how long he’d last in this dive.

“Good luck Ethan.” She called out. He looked over his shoulder and gave her a nod of thanks before disappearing through the door and into the darkness of the interior and out of sight.

Maxine stepped into the stock exchange. The whole interior was a large caged stockroom filled with weapons, food, tanks of water and petrol and various other miscellaneous items. A heavyset man with a jagged scar down his cheek stood behind the counter. He was flanked by two armed guards.

“Welcome to Hope Town.” He said with absolutely no sincerity, his eyes sliding up and down her body.

“What car parts do you have?” She asked him.

“Over there.” The heavyset man told her breasts and gestured towards one side of the room. She wandered over and gazed through the mesh of the cage. A series of shock absorbers, motors, cables and linkages were arranged in no particular order on some racking. Then she noticed a carburettor. It looked exactly like the one in her Mustang. She had to have it.
